Excavation Complete on Lake Mead Connector Tunnel Project

On May 17, Renda Pacific completed all underground excavation for its  Lake Mead Intake No. 3 – Connector Tunnel project for the Southern Nevada Water Authority. The excavation included a vertical shaft 455 ft deep, 26 ft finished diameter, and more than 2,700 ft of modified horseshoe tunnel up to 20 ft x 20 ft. The drill-and-blast excavations encountered highly fractured rock and high groundwater inflows, requiring extensive water control grouting measures. The remaining work involves installation of a 16-ft diameter flanged bulkhead pipe encased in reinforced concrete near the base of the shaft.
