Mark D. Claassen Joins COWI
Jenny Engineering Corp. announced that Mark D. Claassen has joined COWI and Jenny Engineering. Currently, Mark is based in COWI Qatar working on Doha Metro Red Line North Underground project as Design Manager for Construction Support of Tunnel and Underground Structures.
Claassen is an experienced technical program manager with experience in the design and construction of underground structures to include highway, transit, rail, wastewater and water projects, including tunnels over 45 ft in diameter. He has participated in more than 40 tunnel design and construction projects including some notable projects as: Drumanard Tunnel, Louisville, Kentucky (part of the $2.6 billion Ohio River Bridges Project); Central Artery/Tunnel Project, Boston, Massachusetts; Richmond CSO Tunnels in Richmond, Virginia; and the CVI Mill Creek Tunnel in Cleveland, Ohio.
His experience includes work for owners, designers and contractors in soft ground, rock and mixed-face conditions. He has worked on all phases of tunnel design from alignment studies, permitting, preliminary investigations and feasibility studies, through final design; and from shaft or portal excavation to the construction of the final lining. Additionally, his project management experience includes large and/or high risk multidiscipline design and engineering projects.
Prior to joining COWI, Mark was the Senior Vice President, Director of Tunnels and Geotechnical Services at Lachel & Associates.
Claassen will be stationed in Qatar for approximately one year where he will be responsible for managing instrumentation, dewatering and construction support for six stations and 10 miles of twin tube metro tunnels, after which he will join Jenny Engineering to work as Director of International Tunneling and Business Development.
