Bavarian Minister President Visits Herrenknecht Drilling Site

Entrepreneur Dr. Martin Herrenknecht (left) recently met officials including Bavarian Minister President Markus Söder (3rd from right) on the drilling site of a geothermal project. The deep drilling rig for the Laufzorn II project comes from Herrenknecht.

Grünwald, Germany, near Munich, has had a geothermal plant since 2011 that supplies 3,500 households with heat. It is so successful that Erdwärme Grünwald is launching a second geothermal project with Laufzorn II with drilling work beginning this summer.

During a tour of the drilling site, Dr.-Ing. e.h. Martin Herrenknecht explained the technology of the drilling rig to Bavarian Minister President Markus Söder and Bavaria’s Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy Hubert Aiwanger. Martin Herrenknecht sees similar potential for geothermal energy in Baden-Württemberg as in Bavaria: “Bavaria is a leader in geothermal energy. Our deep drilling rigs have been used there many times. Here in South Baden, in the Upper Rhine Valley, we also have excellent conditions for supplying heat from geothermal energy.”

Herrenknecht Vertical, a subsidiary of Herrenknecht AG, has been producing deep drilling rigs for geothermal energy in Schwanau since 2005 and sells them worldwide.
