Cutting Edge Tunnel Conference Held in Seattle
The “Cutting Edge: Megaprojects” conference was held Nov. 3-5, and featured discussion of the complex tunnel projects around the world, most notable the 57.5-ft diameter SR 99 tunnel being constructed in the host city of Seattle.
In addition to the two days of presentations, the conference featured a field trip to see Bertha – the record-breaking TBM excavating the SR 99 tunnel. The 7,000-ton Hitachi Zosen TBM is the world’s largest to date and is advancing the 2-mile long tunnel through downtown Seattle.
Program topics included political risk, cost control, logistics, construction challenges and international megaprojects. The opening session presented the SR 99 project from a variety of viewpoints, including the owner, contractor, engineer and stake-holder.
The conference was sponsored by the UCA of SME and Tunnelling Journal.
