In Memoriam: Olivier Vion

Olivier Vion (1962-2024), the former Executive Director of the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association, passed away July 20.

He served as ITA’s Executive Director from 2009 through 2024. Before this he was in charge of ITA communications, tasked with the development of the use of underground space and sharing knowledge of tunneling techniques.

Previously, he had been in charge at Lafarge Group of special cements for underground works (Channel Tunnel, HSL Tunnels), then deputy sales manager by DTP Terrassement (Bouygues Subsidiary). In 1994, he started his own company of consultancy in marketing in underground works sector worldwide. He was a chartered civil engineer, specialized as a structural engineer and former auditor of College for High Studies in Sustainable Development.

A post on ITA’s feed on X (@ITA_AITES) read:

“Olivier’s dedication to the promotion and development of underground space over the decades with ITA has left an indelible mark on our ITA community and beyond.

“For decades Olivier was the public face of ITA.

“Olivier’s leadership and tireless efforts significantly advanced our mission, inspiring many around the world to embrace the underground.

“His contributions were most recently evident during the WTC 2024 50th celebrations in Shenzhen, China, where his hard work played a crucial role in the success of this landmark, and largest ever ITA event. Olivier’s legacy will live on through the numerous projects and initiatives he championed.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. His memory will continue to inspire future generations of ITA leaders and surely guide ITA in our future endeavors and missions.”
