Massive TERRATEC TBMs Commence Assembly in Mumbai

TERRATEC announced that the assembly has commenced on two Ø14.42m Rock EPB Tunnel Boring Machines at the Goregaon–Mulund Link Road Project (GMLR) site in Mumbai, India.

The machines were procured by J.Kumar–NCC Private Ltd., the contractor executing the project for client Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), with TYPSA serving as Project Management Consultant.

The major component of the first TBM was lowered onto its cradle on March 11, 2026, in a ceremony held at the launching site in Goregaon, in the presence of Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Shri Abhijeet Bangar, J.Kumar–NCC JV and Consultants.

The GMLR project involves the construction of twin road tunnels connecting Film City in Goregaon East to Amar Nagar, Mulund West, passing beneath Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Each tunnel will be excavated in a single drive of approximately 5.3 km, giving a combined length of 10.6 km. Upon completion, the tunnels will provide a critical east–west road link between Mumbai’s major arterial highways, reducing travel times between the Western and Eastern Expressways.

The two TERRATEC Rock EPB TBMs are the largest tunnel boring machines ever deployed in India (Ø14.42 m), producing a finished tunnel internal diameter of 13,000 mm — large enough to accommodate a multi-lane road configuration. The machines are designed for the project’s demanding geological and hydrological conditions, with the alignment passing through Deccan basalt and breccia formations at maximum overburden depths of 143 m and potential high working water pressures. Each machine features two screw conveyors, a fourth-row tail brush seal, twin probe drilling for advance treatment of high water inflows, and additional dewatering systems. Excavated material will be removed via TERRATEC’s tunnel continuous conveyor and overland conveyor system, with segment transport handled by MSVs along the alignment’s -1.1% downward gradient.

This latest deployment reflects TERRATEC’s continued leadership in India’s TBM market and its commitment to delivering tailor-made TBM solutions, backed by prompt onsite assistance, readily available spares, and specialized technical support.
