NAT 2014 Gears Up for LA
The North American Tunneling Conference (NAT) – North America’s largest tunneling event in 2013 – is heading to Los Angeles June 22-25 with the theme “Mission Possible.” The theme is especially relevant in Los Angeles, where social, environmental and political influences can sometimes present more challenges than the geology.
Los Angeles is currently in the midst of a building boom related to its subway system with three major projects in the works. LA Metro is building the projects through design-build contracting, to leverage the expertise of the tunnel contracting teams and accelerate schedule. The LA Metro expansion projects are made possible by the passage of Measure R – a voter-approved tax increase aimed at improving transportation in the greater Los Angeles area, which is notorious for clogged freeways. The projects include Crenshaw/LAX Transit Project, Metro Purple Line Extension, and the Regional Connector Transit Project, which total nearly 20 miles of route expansion valued at approximately $10 billion.
In addition to subway construction, recent tunneling projects in the Los Angeles area include the ECIS and NEIS sewer projects for City of Los Angeles, which comprised 15-plus miles of 8- and 11-ft ID sewer; and Inland Feeder water project for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, which comprised the Badlands Tunnel, Arrowhead East and Arrowhead West.
NAT is being held at the JW Marriott in the vibrant LA Live area in downtown Los Angeles.
The North American Tunneling Conference, held in alternating years with the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC), is sponsored and organized by the Underground Construction Association of SME (UCA).
