TERRATEC TBM Progresses on CIDCO Water Tunnel Project in Mumbai

TERRATEC’s T83B Open TBM is delivering strong and consistent results on the CIDCO Long Treated Water Tunnel Project in Mumbai, India. Since its launch, the machine has maintained steady progress, with excavation output increasing month by month as the drive has advanced and the project team has optimized operations.

Production rates built up firmly in early 2025, culminating in July with an exceptional 752 meters excavated in a single month. The achievement was acknowledged publicly by the project leadership and has been celebrated as a national record for a water tunnel drive using a single rail track and two mining locomotives.

The consistently strong performance reflects the smooth integration between TERRATEC’s machine design and the contractor’s tunneling methodology. The T83B has proven well suited to the geological conditions of the alignment, with its cutterhead configuration, ground support systems, and operational flexibility contributing to reliable advance rates throughout the drive. The project team has further enhanced productivity through disciplined logistical planning and effective coordination across shifts, supported at all stages by TERRATEC’s field service engineers.

The CIDCO treated water tunnel plays a vital role in strengthening Mumbai’s water infrastructure, and the progress achieved to date underscores the capability of both the machine and the project crew. TERRATEC remains closely involved as excavation continues, ensuring responsive technical support and consistent machine performance across the remaining section of the tunnel. With the project advancing smoothly, the T83B is on track to complete its drive with the same dependable results that have characterized its progress so far.

As a leading manufacturer of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), Raise Boring Machines, and Microtunneling Systems, TERRATEC has a proven record of delivering tailored tunneling solutions across Asia, Europe, and the Americas. TERRATEC continues to reinforce its leadership in India’s tunneling sector, building on successful deployments in major metro projects across Delhi, Lucknow, Pune, and Mumbai.
