UK Cancels Stonehenge Tunnel Project

Officials in the United Kingdom has cancelled the controversial A303 highway tunnel near Stonehenge, the BBC reported on July 29.

The proposed tunnel was part of an 8-mile highway improvement project that included a tunnel at least 2 miles long underneath the World Heritage Site. The alignment closely followed the existing A303 route, but a further 50 m away from the Stonehenge monument, avoiding important archaeological sites, and avoiding intrusion on the view of the setting sun from the stones during the winter solstice.

The New Civil Engineer website reported that the cancelled project, estimated at £1.7 billion, was part of a budget overhaul undertaken by the new Labour government.
