Bi-County Breakthough

The mining part of the Bi-County Water Tunnel Project for the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) is substantially complete. The tunnel boring machine holed through Friday afternoon April 26 at the shaft near Tuckerman Lane and I-270. The 5.3-mile tunnel is now complete and pipe installation on the final western leg of the tunnel will begin in about a month.

This $112 million project includes 28,147 lf of 10-ft diameter rock tunnel, one main working shaft (S-3), 35-ft diameter and 176-ft deep, and two receiving shafts, one 109-ft deep and 15-ft diameter (S-4), and one 136-ft deep and 22-ft diameter (S-1).

The project is being built by Renda/Southland/SAK JV.
