First Tunnel Drive Completed in Copenhagen’s Cityringen

Cityringen Cityringen, the City Circle Subway Line in Copenhagen, marked a milestone in February as the first of four tunnels drives was completed when the tunnel boring machines Minerva and Eva broke into Copenhagen Central station.

The machines were greeted by a number of distinguished guests, including the Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt, the Mayor of Copenhagen and the Danish Transport Minister.

Having each travelled over 5.4 km and installed a total of 7,090 segmental lining rings, the tunnel boring machines have completed the project’s first section of tunneling, marking a major milestone for the Cityringen project. From there, both TBMs will be transported over ground to the other side of the city to continue the excavation of the future metro tunnels.

Along with the project’s other two TBMs – Nora and Tria – 34% of the Cityringen Tunnels have been completed to date. With the new metro due to open in 2019, six out of the 17 future stations currently under construction have now been linked by the tunnels.
