New VMT Microtunneling Platform Enhances Safety, Efficiency

Efficient tunnelling depends on seamless communication between surface and underground teams, not just voice contact but also shared access to real-time data and live information. Making this possible requires a resilient digital infrastructure that can withstand the unique conditions of the tunnel.
TunnelHub by VMT is based on such an intelligent network infrastructure, providing uninterrupted Wi-Fi coverage with access points every 50 meters. All components are automatically detected, configured, and updated – enabling fast Plug & Play setup without predefined cable routing or manual setup.
The integrated Smart Cable System not only transfers data, but also optionally powers tunnel lighting and emergency lighting when choosing smart system cables (SSC) with LEDs, eliminating the need for additional hardware boxes and saving space in small-diameter tunnels. TunnelHub also enables real-time personnel tracking via smartphone, showing who is where in the tunnel at any time. Expandable by design, the system integrates alarms, cameras and safety sensors, creating the foundation for better visibility, faster decision-making and a safer working environment.
“TunnelHub ensures uninterrupted communication between surface and tunnel operations, enabling project teams to respond faster, coordinate more effectively, and providing all stakeholders with an enhanced feeling of safety,” says Jürgen Göckel, Head of Business Development Microtunneling. “With just a few steps, the system is up and running – making it a powerful tool for smarter microtunneling workflows.”
TunnelHub is already being deployed on active projects and will be introduced to international markets over the coming months.
For over 30 years, VMT has supported tunnel projects around the world with high-performance solutions for navigation, data management, production control and process monitoring. With almost 3,000 tunnel drives completed using VMT technology, the company is a trusted partner for construction companies working on complex infrastructure projects.
In addition to tunnelling, VMT also develops precision measurement systems for industrial production processes. The VMT Group employs more than 220 people worldwide and is part of the Herrenknecht Group, the global market leader in mechanical tunnelling technology.
