The Elizabeth River Tunnels (ERT) Project has been recognized by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ) as an Extraordinary Environmental Enterprise. SKW Constructors JV, the design-build contractor for the Project, becomes the first construction project contractor in Virginia to be awarded membership in VDEQ’s Environmental Excellence Program (VEEP) at the E4 Level.
The E4 level requires facilities to have fully implemented Environmental Management Systems (verified by a third party) and commit to measures for continuous and sustainable environmental progress and community involvement. Of the 400 facilities currently participating in VEEP, only 10 percent attain the rigorous E4 level designation.
Additional environmental achievements on the ERT Project include:
- 95 percent recycling goal, with close to 99 percent recycling of construction waste
- Water reuse efforts including a self-contained concrete chute washout and self-contained truck tire wash system
- Reuse of crushed asphalt for stabilizing soil
