Second Lane of Elizabeth River Tunnels Opens to Traffic

elizabeth-river-tunnelOn Friday, August 26, the Elizabeth River Tunnels (ERT) Project partners – Elizabeth River Crossings (ERC), the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), and SKW Constructors (a joint venture of Skanska USA, Kiewit Construction and Weeks Marine, Inc.) opened the second lane of the U.S. 58 West Midtown Tunnel. This construction milestone marks the first time ever that motorists can travel in two lanes on U.S. 58 West under the Elizabeth River, and happened four months ahead of schedule.

“Opening the second travel lane in the US 58 West Midtown Tunnel immediately doubles roadway capacity for motorists traveling from Norfolk to Portsmouth,” said ERC CEO Greg Woodsmall.  “Our project team worked extremely hard to deliver this much-needed improvement, months in advance of our contract delivery date. This new facility will help to reduce our regional congestion, ultimately improving the quality of life for Hampton Roads residents.”

Once the transition is made, motorists using the Brambleton Avenue ramp to access the US 58 West Midtown Tunnel will now feed directly into the right lane toward the new tunnel with no merging required. Traffic traveling south on Hampton Boulevard, heading for the Midtown Tunnel westbound will flow directly into the left lane of the new tunnel.

The US 58 East Midtown Tunnel will remain in a single lane configuration from Portsmouth to Norfolk while the tunnel undergoes rehabilitation.
